Charles Mercado has worked as a Network Producer and Director for CBS and PBS television in his 17 years of broadcast experience. Mr. Mercado holds degrees in Fine Arts/Communications and in Education from Eastern Michigan University. He is also the recipient of 7 Michigan EMMY Awards as a Producer and Director. After teaching 3rd through 6th grade in the California School System, Mr. Mercado returned to Michigan to expand on his passion for educating by creating and directing K-12 educational programming. His projects have included student-produced programs such as "Back Porch Video," where students functioned as writers, production crew and on air talent. In his position as Director-Producer for Detroit Public Television, Mr. Mercado is active in local productions including "Reading Rainbow Specials," "Back Stage Pass," "smART TV," as well as local and national fundraising programs. Nationally, Mr. Mercado was the Series Director for the PBS Emmy winning youth Series "Club Connect," which has been broadcast in 34 countries, and he also directed "My Day at Malcolm X Academy," which took first place in the European Broadcast Union's International Youth Awareness Competition.
Mr. Mercado recently served as Executive Producer
and Creative Director for a two-year educational multi-media project “The
Enrichment Channel”, developing early literacy skills in Michigan public
school students. The $800,000 project was funded by a technology grant through
the US Department of Education. Mr. Mercado worked with Michigan’s leading
early elementary literacy, educational technology and arts education experts to
launch this highly successful project. The series content incorporates content
from the Michigan Curriculum Framework, Michigan Literacy Progress Profile
(MLPP), SCOPE, and follows constructivist instructional practices. Now
available, each Learning Content Unit has a VHS broadcast program, a companion
inter active CD-ROM, and an internet web site containing lesson plans and
instructional information. Mr.
Mercado continues to combine the use of media and education through
instructional workshops in schools and in the community. His individualized
workshops are designed to help teachers build the skills necessary to
confidently use multi-media technology in the classroom.
